We receive 88 competitive applications for this year’s program! After much deliberation, we selected 10 amazing undergraduate students to participate in our 10-week REU program.
Congratulations to our second SERGUS Cohort! (Pictured below.)

They are from universities all over the country, as seen below:

They have been hard at work conducting research, since arriving at SIUE on May 26-27. They are measuring microclimates (e.g., temperature, heat index, heat intensity) found throughout Edwardsville using the MCT Trails, as well as assessing the vegetation structure and ant biodiversity along the Trails. We are thankful to MCT for granting access to their properties for this research. We are also thankful to all the people who have volunteered their time to interact with the students and share their expertise. Your insights and involvement has helped elevate this REU experience.
We are approaching the end of week eight and getting closer to our presentation events, where students will share the findings from all their hard work. We welcome anyone interested in hearing about the result to the following public presentation events:
- POSTER PRESENTATIONS: In conjunction with the REU Fellows at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC). Posters will be displayed at the Jerry F. Costello field station in East Alton, IL on Tuesday, July 23, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM (CDT). Refreshments will be provided.
- GROUP PRESENTATION: The SERGUS REU students will weave everything together in a talk at the Edwardsville Public Library Large Meeting Room on Tuesday, July 30, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM (CDT), followed by an open session from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM (CDT) where people will have another opportunity to view their posters and talk with the students about their research experience and findings.
We hope you can make it!
Watch for more about all the amazing things we’ve done this summer.
